*This creature strongly resembles a natural stalagmite almost 10 feet tall. A single red eye glares above a huge maw filled with jagged teeth, and thin, flexible strands or tendrils whip around its rocky body.*

#### special abilities
### Extraction (Ex)
An urophion that begins its turn with an opponent grappled in its mouth can attempt a grapple check to extracts the opponent's brain. If successful, the urophion extracts and consumes the creature's brain, which kills it instantly (unless it has multiple brains). Creatures without brains are not affected by this ability.
### Strands (Ex)
A urophion can extend up to six thin, sticky strands from its body at a time, launching them to a maximum range of 50 feet. A roper’s attacks with its strands resolve as ranged touch attacks. These strands are quite strong, but can be severed by dealing 5 points slashing damage (a strand is AC 20). A creature struck by a strand is numbed and weakened by the strange material, and must make a DC 19 Fortitude save or take 2d8 points of Strength damage. The save DC is Constitution-based.
#### tactics
Like a roper, a urophion hunts by standing completely still until prey wanders near. It can then use detect thoughts to pick out the best targets for immediate attack, which it launches with surprise.
#### ecology
**Terrain** Underground
**Organization** Solitary, pair, or cluster (3–6)
**Treasure** No coins; 50% goods (stone only); no items
**Advancement** 13–24 HD (Large); 25–36 HD (Huge)
A urophion is the result when an illithid tadpole is implanted into a roper’s brain. These miserable creatures are nearly as intelligent as their mind flayer kin, but they are treated as no more than convenient tools for the mind flayers to use as they see fit. They live lonely, brooding lives on the fringes of mind flayer society, serving as guardians and sentinels, with little reward for their loyalty other than the promise of joining the elder brain on death.
