A direct hit deals 2d6 points of damage, and 1d4 points of damage each following round for the next 1d8 rounds. Creatures within 5 feet of the targeted creature take 1d4 points of acid damage from the splash, and do not take any lingering damage. ### Cling (Ex) If a creature leaves an abyssal ant swarm’s square, the swarm suffers 1d6 points of damage to reflect the loss of its numbers as several of the crawling pests continue to cling tenaciously to the victim. A creature with abyssal ants clinging to him takes 3d6 points of damage at the end of his turn each round. As a full-round action, he can remove the ants with a DC 21 Reflex save. High wind or any amount of damage from an area effect destroys all clinging ants. The save DC is Dexterity-based. ### Consume (Ex) An abyssal ant swarm can rapidly consume any creature it swarms over. Against helpless or nauseated targets, an abyssal ant swarm attack deals 8d6 points of damage. ### Penetration (Su) The swarm attack of an abyssal ant swarm can partially ignore damage reduction, treating any nonepic damage reduction as 10 less than normal. #### ecology **Terrain** Any land and underground (Abyss) **Organization** Solitary or army (3–8 swarms) **Advancement** — Abyssal ants are the infernal version of abyssal ants: 8-inch-long bodies of red and black chitin, glowing blue multifaceted eyes, and purple mandibles dripping with acidic slime. They swarm over the Lower Planes and, when summoned forth by an evil wizard or demon, can infest the Material Plane as well, leaving half-dissolved wreckage in their wake. Abyssal ants do not speak, but they understand Abyssal. ### Combat Abyssal ants exhibit little interest in tactics. As a swarm, they do possess a modicum of intelligence and have been known to retreat from unsuccessful attacks.
