Phiuhl gas—Inhaled; save Fort DC 18; frequency 1/round for 6 rounds; effect 1d6 Strength damage; cure 2 consecutive saves. The DC save is Constitution-based. ### Desiccate (Ex) Any character in a square occupied by a phiuhl at the end of the phiuhl's turn takes damage from its heat touch, and must make a Fortitude save (DC 16) or gain two negative levels. The save DC is Charisma-based and includes a +2 racial bonus. ### Gaseous (Ex) A phiuhl's form is corporeal, but insubstantial, like a cloud of vapor. It cannot manipulate solid objects, nor can it enter water or other liquids. It is subject to the effects of wind, can pass through small holes or narrow openings (even mere cracks), and can occupy squares occupied by enemies. ### Inscrutable Mind (Ex) Any creature attempting to interact directly with a phiuhl's thought's (such as via _detect thoughts_ or telepathy) must succeed at a DC 14 Will save or suffer the effects of _feeblemind_ for 1d6 rounds. #### ecology **Terrain** Gehenna **Organization** Solitary or pair **Treasure** None **Advancement** 10–19 HD (Large); 20–27 HD (Huge) A warped and deadly reflection of air elementals, phiuhls pollute the desolate cliffs of Gehenna’s first layer like sentient columns of living steam. Formed from an unholy amalgamation of misery, pain, hunger, sweltering heat, and poisonous vapors, a phiuhl resembles a swirling, churning miasma of green and violet vapors. With concentration, an onlooker can make out a roughly humanoid shape amid the chaos, with a suggestion of long, spindly arms or a hint of a leering, elongated face wracked with suffering. Phiuhls normally travel in pairs, though that is the only hint of any sort of racial identity among them. Whether or not they draw sustenance from their predations upon mortals is a subject of much debate among scholars, who occasionally manage to trap one or two on the Material Plane for bizarre and twisted experiments. Phiuhls serve no master, however; their only goal seems to be to destroy any other kind of creature they encounter. ### Combat A phiuhl knows it can’t do much damage with its heat touch, so instead it prefers to fly above its enemies so that it can subject as many of them as possible to its death gas without risking melee. Thereafter, it swoops in for desiccating attacks until all its enemies have been destroyed.
