They have no magical abilities at all and are almost mindless. They act more like wild beasts than anything else. Manes are 3-foot-tall humanoids with pale, bloated flesh riddled with maggots. Their white eyes show no sign of sentience, but their claws and jagged teeth betray their feral nature. Manes cannot speak but can understand simple concepts spoken in any language (as a side effect of their limited use of tanar’ri telepathy). Manes are the chaff and rabble of the Abyss, contributing nothing but their own pitiful hate to the surrounding environs. Manes can appear anywhere in the Abyss. They are sold as slaves or food in Abyssal cities, hunted by more powerful demons for sport, or simply left to wander aimlessly, seeking an end to their horrid non-lives. A mane stands 3 feet tall. Despite its bloated appearance, it is surprisingly light, weighing only 15 pounds. Manes travel in gibbering, snarling hordes when not given a higher purpose by more powerful demons. Although physically weak, their hatred drives them to attack anything that isn’t a demon. Among the demon lords, they are viewed as a widely used, expendable fighting force. Many demon armies contain vast mobs of thousands of manes used to wash over an opposing force, much in the same way a controlled fi re can be used to assault a large army. ### Combat Manes are nearly mindless demons devoted to savagery and fury. They obey the commands of any demons more power ful than themselves, including blindly plunging into battle, heedless of any danger. They are slow, stupid, and largely ineffective combatants, but in large groups they make good use of swarm tactics.
