Even if you cannot rest for 8 hours, you still gain hit points equal to your character level, and 1 point of ability damage. With a full night's rest, you recover 1 hit points per character level + 1 hit point per Constitution modifier. With a full day of bed rest, this increases to 2 hit points per character level + 2 hit points per Constitution modifier.
