# Saint Toman Atvar **Saint Toman Atvar** is the fourth of the five prophets of **Amagyr**, venerated and worshiped by the **Miryag** people. He is known as the Grand Arbiter, Peacemaker, the Fourth Light of Amangyr, and was the founder of the Atvar Confederacy.   ## History ### Early Life Toman Atvar XVII was born to Toman XVI and Erriet Atvar, leaders of Clan Atvar of the Varyag. Toman's father died of illness when the boy was barely five years of age, which left young Toman to be raised his grandfather, Vurnon Ord. His mother Erriet was the clan leader of the Atvar, and daughter Junne Atvar had already been granted commission of her own ship.   Toman would learn very well from his grandfather's teachings and mother's example. He proved himself to be a proficient sailor, a capable officer, an erudite scholar, a shrewd negotiator and keen observer of human nature. He was made second in command of his mother's ship, the Atvar Sunlancer. Toman ascended to captaincy upon his mother's death, a brutal affair involving the savage S'lili'kuul, and later was elected clan leader, much to the outrage of his sister Junne. Toman was an inexperienced, and had been elected at remarkably young age, yet his age never went remarked by his peers or subordinates. Toman had a confident demeanor and natural gravitas which suited him well to leadership.   ### Warrior of Amangyr's Light   During his time as captain and clan leader, Toman had a number of encounters with the legendary iconoclast Esta Merlani, the Lady of Freedom. Their first encounter involved Esta attempting to liberate the Pirate-King Graaf d’Lur. Toman and a young Lieutenant Werden Auzast dueled Esta to a stalemate. As the battle raged, Toman and Esta argued the moral and political aspects of the life and crimes of Graaf d’Lur. Toman held his ground both tactically and rhetorically, causing Esta to lose her chance to free d'Lur. Both came away with scars, bruises, and a respect for their opponent.   Esta and Toman would encounter each other several times over the next few years. Occasionally as enemies, more often as allies, and eventually as friends. The pair disagreed on many things, but shared a common good will and respect. They challenged and inspired each other to represent the virtue of their beliefs as best they could: Toman and his belief in the honor of just authority, and Esta in her belief in the natural rights and freedom of all sentient peoples.   When Esta and Annis Dayrin were captured and put on trial for heresy against Artrya, it was Toman who would act as their advocate. His eloquent and impassioned defense was thought to be undeniable Annis and Esta were sure to go free. The arbiter of the case, Petelus Sartengiro, rendered a guilty verdict none the less. Eventually, it would later be discovered that Petelus had pre-arranged the verdict with the Stormfront, inquisitors of Ma'ar Leyna. But the immediate reaction to the decision was revolt among a number of the Varyag who had converted to worship of Amangyr. Toman, Esta and Annis were rescued by the revolting Amangyrans. Their leader was a brash warrior named Unthar Karrak.   After their freedom had been secured, Toman argued against the Amangyrans waging an open revolt against the other Varyag. Instead he offered to take himself into exile along with Annis and Esta. Unthar pledged his life and his ship to them, and the other agreed to spread the word of Amangyr, but not to wage war against their fellow clansfolk. Unthar, Toman, Esta and Annis would set forth upon the Karrak Sunshield and go on a series of adventures and trial which would lead them to become the **Warriors of Amangyr's Light**.   During their battle with the Fiends of Oreshi, Surella struck Toman in the chest with an arrow. Toman was gravely injured, but survived the encounter. His damaged lung never fully recovered, and he would soon contract a wasting sickness as a result.   ##### Saint of Amangyr and Founder of the Confederacy   The Warriors of Amangyr's Light were companions and comrades in arms. Together they had completed impossible tasks and saved countless lives, and faced certain death on a number of occasions. However, their fellowship was fraught with tension, made worse when Rhynnis Polimon converted to Amangyr and joined their band. Annis and Unthar tolerated eachother's presense. Esta objected vehmintly to Rynnis' inclusion in their band, and their relationship only grew more sour from there. Rhynnis and Annis were good friends, but Rhynnis' affection for her went beyond friendship. At the center of this was Toman, who managed to keep the group together and pointed in the same direction during their adventures.   After the trial of the landing and the establishment of the Miryag Nation, the bond between the five withered. Toman tried his best to keep the newly minted **Saints of Amangyr** together, but personal grievances, political disagreements and irreconcilable philosophical outlooks would prove too much for Toman to resolve, and the five would go their separate ways.   Toman took ten clans of Myrag who shared his vision of a coequal confederacy of clans, and sailed south to Liran. There he and the clan leaders established the Atvar Confederacy. Sadly, the arrow Surella struck him with would claim his life in the formative years of the Confederacy. It was up to the remaining clan leaders, the Founding Elders, to shape the destiny of Atvar's confederacy.   --- # Church of the Grand Arbiter The church of St. Toman is well respected instutituion across the lands of the northern world, moreso than in the confederacy itself. The arbiters are renown for their wisdom, impartiality and their rhetorical skill. Many have called upon the curch to act as a mediator for negotations or to settle disputes between agreived parties, or to defend or advocate for those accused of crimes.   The central seat of the church is the College of Consensus, which is found within the city of Atvar. The figurehead of the church is the First Arbiter, but real power of the church lies within the Council of Grand Clercs, also known as the Keeper of Precident.   The Keepers maintain exhaustive records of the decisions rendered by arbiters, the opinions informing those decsisions, and who the involved parties were. They also maintain a vast collection of legal research from a variety of sovreign realms, trade orginizations and religous orders, complete with trestises on the moral and political philosophies that inform those laws. This library of information is used to educate current and prospective arbiters, and as the basis for the dispatch of Administrators.   #### Holy Texts _Lubrei zie Atvar_ (The Thoughts of Atvar) is the primary text for the Atvar church. It recounts the events of the Warriors of Amangyr's light, and paints the other saints as exemplars of moral spheres.     # Worshipers The faithful of St. Toman pride themselves on honesty...   Many diplomats and merchants who are not Atvaran or even Miryag still venerate St. Toman as a paragon of wisdom and moral rectitude.   #### Taboo Like Amangyrans, follower of St. Toman will not eat shellfish or any "creature of the sea." For most, this includes aquatic mammals, cephalopods and shellfish.     #### Clergy The Church of the Grand Arbiter is comprised mostly of Clerics and Archivists, as the study and application of law are the most valued aspsects of service within the church.   Paladins, Warpriests and inquisitors of St. Toman are rarely seen in the confederacy, but in the wider world there are Orders of Administration that are occiasionally called to address parties who have agreed to aribration, then violate the terms of said arbitration.   ---   # Other Worshipers and Faiths #### Varyag > Block quote text exists to fill in a rough idea of the content, but has not been refined, fleshed out or edited.
