Amangyr is the Flame of Justice, the Cursebreaker, the Light of Reason and the Defender of Humanity. As a monotheistic deity, Amangyr is associated with all virtues, and is seen as a omnipotent, omnipresent and omnibenevolent being. Amangyr is not the creator of the world, but is the essence of sapience that separates humanoids from animals. Amangyr is the deity at the center of a number of religious traditions, most of which focus on a mortal figure who has received revelation or blessings from Amangyr.

## History
### In The Beginning...
In the time before words, humans lived as beasts, referred to as **valen**. The valen lived in the wilds, bayed like hounds, ran on four limbs, and for all their savage cunning they had no conception of the world beyond their animalistic impulses. Amangyr watched the beasts of Temnia, and saw among the Valen one who was greater than the others: [[Etam]], the first man.
The flame of Amangyr appeared to Etam, and in doing to Etam gained enlightenment. Etam strove to share his gift among the other valen, but the others fled in terror from his flame. The first to stay and behold the flame of Amangyr was [[Ytha]], the first woman. She, too, gained enlightenment.
The pair utilized their god-given reason to live long, healthy and fruitful lives. At the dawn of Etam's one hundredth year, Amangyr spoke to him. He offered to restore Etam's youth and virility, and in exchange he and his children and his grandchildren and grandchildren would bring the light of Amangyr to the valen. And so it was that humanity ascended beyond the bestial to take their place as the rightful rulers of Temnia.
Of course, not all the valen chose to embrace the light. Some preferred savagery to reason. Some shunned the light to revel in blood and death. This may have been a flaw in the valen, or it may have been a result of the dark magics of the false goods, the Atan. These savages remained animalistic, even laying with beasts and spawning creatures with both animal and valen nature. These creatures would become the savage species, the **[[Vaal]]**.
### The Four Kingdoms of Yagmar
From the children of Etam and Ytha were born the first people, who were called the **Yagmar**. These descendants of Etam journeyed forth and claimed that land for the people, securing their safety and prosperity against the savage valen and their Atan masters. After many generations, after much struggle, death and hardship, four grand kingdoms rose to prominence, each ruled by the blood of Etam: Thornil, Atamia, Sheris and Culdecarr.
### The Crusade of the Shining City
Within the lands controlled by the Yagmaran Kingdoms, there was peace and safety, but in the dark wilds beyond, the resentful and savage Vaal grew in number, as did the power of their Atan masters. One day, they launched an audacious offense, an assault on the **Shining City of Syles**, where Amangyr resides. Amangyr was prepared for such an eventuality, for it was this very reason that the Yagmar people were raised to enlightenment.
The rulers of the Yagmaran kingdoms gathered their armies and launched a crusade. Many glorious battles were fought, and eventually the Yagmaran forces arrived at the **Verdant Hills of Sylestia**. The crusaders waged a fearsome assault on the Atan and their bestial servants. As the armies fought, the Atan conceived a foul plan. They used their fiendish powers to conjure the wicked beast Maarl, and set it loose within the Shining City. In doing so they hoped to befoul Amangyr's realm, and through that dampen the connection between Amangyr and the Yagmaran host.
Only those for whom the blood of Etam was strong would be able to enter the Shining City without further damaging it, and so it was that Ester, Queen of Thornil; Tanar, King of Atamia; Alycia, Queen of Sheris and Maric, King of Culdecarr entered the City of Syles. The four prevailed; gravely wounded, Maarl was forced to flee the Shining City.
With their victory secured, Amangyr ejected the Atan from Sylestia, and banished them to the **Black Sea of Zalimar.** The kings and queens of Yagmar did not survive their encounter and they became martyrs, purged of their imperfections and allowed to remain in Syles and bask forevermore in the light of Amangyr.
As their last mortal acts, the Yagmaran monarchs named their successors, and upon them bestowed the weapons with which they defeated Maarl: **the Weapons of Etama**.
### The Twilight of Yagmar
The Atan, false gods who transgressed against Amagyr and trespassed upon Sylestia, were thrown into the Black Sea of Zalimar, doomed to remain frozen upon the sea floor for all of eternity. In addition to their banishment, Amangyr twisted their once beautiful forms into ugly, hateful things that better represented their vile nature.
But the black ice that held these twisted Atan in place cracked and splintered as Ma'ar Leyna struggled against her prison, and through these cracks some escaped Zalimar. These creatures would roam the land and lash out against all whom they encountered. Destroying and killing because their former glory and power was forever gone. All the monsters that roam the world are the descendants of the false gods, who pay the eternal price for their transgression against Amangyr.
For the Yagmaran Kingdoms, generations and dynasties passed. The people grew complacent, and new problems and new powers rose to occupy the minds of the people. False prophets and pretender gods gained power and influence, and the Kingdoms that had once dominated the world were merely part of a vast panoply of completing civilizations. Atamia's King abdicated to a council of Merchants, Culdecarr's Queen converted to the Worship of the Heathen God Yarevken, and Sheris's King was in the middle of a protracted losing battle with the Witchthrong leaving his people to languish, and Thornil's Queen had fallen into ill health, and the succession to her throne was a contentious contest between two of her great grandchildren.
While generations passed for the Yagmaran, [Ma'ar Leyna](Marleyna.md) bided her time. She freed and released many terrible monsters to plague the Yagmaran people, and she awaited for her opportunity to strike a blow against Amangyr. That opportunity came with the civil war of Thornil. The war left the church in disarray, and in the chaos, Ma'ar Leyna was able to extinguish the **Beacon of Bastuun**, severing the material world's connection to Amangyr.
From this tragedy came the great cataclysm, the final ruin of the Yagmaran Kingdoms. An age of darkness and strife ensued. Ma'ar Leyna broke free from her prison, and her fiends laid waste to the lands of Yagmar. The people fled in terror and panic, their wealth and culture lay abandoned in ruins. Ma'ar Leyna sprung upon them, offering protection from their troubles in exchange for their obedience. So it was that the Curse of Ma'ar Leyna fell upon the Yagmaran people.
### The Saints of Amangyr
After generations in bondage to Ma'ar Leyna, the first new revelation of Amangyr came to the Yagmaran. Based upon this revelation, the **[[Saints of Amangyr]]** rose to proclaim [Ma'ar Leyna](Marleyna.md) a false god and deceiver. They set forth on a quest to reclaim the **Weapons of Etama**, defeat the **Beast of Fate**, and relight the flame of Amangyr, and free the faithful from Ma'ar Leyna's Curse.
## Teachings
Amangyr is a monotheistic god, who is omnipotent and omnibenevolent, and whose providence provides a path for an idealized destiny. He is generally seen as the source of reason, virtue, and the capacity to see beauty. Amangyr is a transcendant figure, not fully knowable to mortals, and whos will has been passed down via revelation to prophets and heroes. The most widely known of these prophets are the **Saints of Amangyr**, who have dinstinctive philosophical perspectives and who emphasise different moral paradigms. The specifics of these are covered in their indivdual entries. The common threads among Amangyran religions are:
1. The primacy of Amangyr as the only God in existence.
2. The indivisibility of Amangyr as a singular entity.
3. The authority of Amangyr as the abitor of morality and justice.
4. The identity of Amangyr as the source of all sentience among humanoid mortals.
5. The transcendence of Amangyr as a being beyond comprehension of mortal understanding.
6. The ??? of Amangyr as
### Holy Text
The **Telestol Aman**, the Pillars of Amangyr, is the primary holy text of the Amangyran faith. It clarifies, corrects and contextualizes some of the raw legendary material in the **Zavet Yagmaran**. In some cases, it overwrites or debunks some of philosophical conclusions found in the older Zavet Yagmaran stories. It also fills in gaps in the teachings, caused either by some of the scrolls being undiscovered (or lost to the ravages of time) or by simple omission on the part of the chroniclers of the original texts.
In addition to that, the Zavet Yagmaran, the Stories of the Old World, are considered a holy text. The Zavet Yagmaran is a collection of philosophical essays, morality tales and epic prose that also claims to record the history of the vast Yagamaran Kingdoms. It lays out the prophecy of the five revelations, which foretells the coming of the Warriors of Amangyr's Light, the rediscovery of the last throne of the Yagmaran Kings, the rekindling of Amangyr's Light, the unification of the Yagmaran people, and the final battle between Amangyr and Ma'ar Leyna.
### Afterlife
Amangyr holds that the souls of those who have embraced the light of Amangyr will reside upon the hills of Syles, forever within the sight of Amangyr. In this proximity, they will be awakened to the full understanding of Amangyr's glory, and in doing so transform themselves into beings greater than mortals: Celestials. Those who have rejected Amangyr are barred from Syles, but cannot return to the living. They are fated to wander the edges of the world, easy prey for Ma'ar Leyna. Those she captures and drags into the Black Sea of Zalimar are subjected to unimaginable suffering and damnation, until such time as they swear fealty to Ma'ar Leyna, and she transmutes them into monsters and release them back into the world of the living.
### Taboos
Worshipers of Amangyr will not eat shellfish or any "creature of the sea." For most, this includes aquatic mammals, cephalopods and shellfish. Other fish are seen by most as exempt as they are "creatures of the water," as fish are often found in lakes and rivers as well as at sea. The more stringent adherents (usually those who live well away from the ocean) will also refuse to eat fish caught at sea. Worshipers of Amangyr will not extinguish a flame with salt-water. They will not will not sleep aboard a ship that is moored or docked, and generally will opt for travel over land rather than by sea, if possible. Amangyrans do not take well to curses or meddling with "fortune." They will shun those who are thought to dabble in hexes or curses (or good luck charms), and will bristle at calling their use of vulgar language "curse words."
