# Tumna ##### The Master of Builders, Husband of Varda > Tumna was a the king of the treants and keeper of the ancient forests. When Amanguirre threatened to consume the Yagmaran lands and people, Tumna despaired, for his trees would be forever lost to the conflagration.  Varda offered Tumna a deal. She would save his beloved trees and he along with them if they carried the Yagmaran people onto the sea. Tumna agrees and he used his power to ensure that the living souls of the trees harvested during the great build were sealed within the ships built of their wood.  The only way Tumna could guarnatee the souls of his beloved trees were safe from the fires of Amaguirre or the mistreatment by the Yagmaran refugees was to divide his body among the ships, and bind himself to all the ships of the fleet.  In doing so, Tumna became the living spirit of all ships, and the patron shipwrights.  The living spirit of Tumna inside each ship is why crew tend to anthropomorphize their ships, and it is their answer to the problem of the Ship of Theseus. Even if you replace every board and nail, rope and sail, the "spirit" of the ship is consistent throughout.   One of the taboos of Varyag worship is to never burn shipswood. One would sooner freeze to death than burn a piece of a wrecked vessel. Wrecked ships are brought to shore, if possible. Tumna is also a "hearth and home" type of god, since most Varyag live their entire lives aboard ship.
