Both arms and legs are capped in powerful talons. Most shi’ruul feature winged arms which allow a few of them a limited degree of flight. There are rare instances of shi’ruul have back mounted wings, while some unfortunates have no wings at all. Sh’ruul are widely varied in appearance, more so perhaps than any other race on Temnia. Some stand no taller than dwarves, while others rival ylvani in height, and they range from gaunt to rotund their build. Their eyes are perfectly round, and colors range from yellow to brown to red. Beaks are typically broad and pointed, wide variation exists within the population. Shi’ruul have feathers that coat most of their body, though some have bald necks and heads. Their plumage is typically brown, black or white, though patterns are not uncommon, and some even have patches of brightly colored feathers. Some shi’ruul will even go so far as to dye their feathers to accent their appearance. Clothing is typically loose and light, and emphasize mobility of the arms and wings. Metal jewelry (anklets, bracelets and rings) are commonplace, and some will even pierce their beaks. Feather dyes and beak paint are also used to accent Shi’ruul appearance. ## In Society Shi’ruul are largely a mystery. Their presence has been known for centuries, but until very recently they have been a reclusive people. Only the occasional wingless outcast would be seen outside the Vallanpyrillo. The largest legacy of their culture is the gift of mithril, which has been trickling out of the Protectorate since the cataclysm. Typically it would be in the form of intricately designed jewelry and sculpture, but occasional bits of armor and weaponry would also surface. Shi’ruul are also gifted artisans in the medium of leather, bone and ivory, as well as strange lightweight metals. The shi’ruul in person are a well meaning and gracious people who seems incredibly knowledgeable about the arcane mysteries of the cosmos, but know nothing about how people interact or what common society looks like. They are not naive, and few would be foolish enough to try and put something past a shi’ruul’s keen mind. It’s more that their customs and expectations are foreign, which gives them the reputation of being excentrics. Good fortune seems to follow the shi’ruul. Folk tales and rumors regarding the power of a shi’ruul’s kind word bolstering a town’s harvest or a freely given token helping to ward off evil spirits abound. The protectorate does its best to encourage these tales, and they do their best to ingratiate themselves to their fellow Temnians. ## Relations The Shi’ruul and Ylvani are on the best terms, their relationship having stretched back before the great emergence and potentially even before the great cataclysm. Both have the perspective of long life, a reverence for nature, and a deep respect of magic. Even the Yelin have a hard time dismissing the Shi’ruul as “inferiors.” Humans are the most promising of the other intelligent races on Temnia. The Dayrin and the Varyag are the most welcoming of the human nations, but the Shi’ruul see great things in each human society, even if some of those would rather keep the Shi’ruul at arm’s length. Shi’ruul respect the tenacity and ingenuity of the halflings. Word of Teeon’s Star has reached the protectorate, and such legendary magic has greatly improved the halflings in the estimation of the Shi’ruul. Dwarves are seen as contentious neanderthals, a civilization that is set on being backwards about just about everything. Gnomes are similarly dismissed, as they are less civilized than dwarves, if out of willful ignorance rather than a desire to go about developing their society in completely the wrong way. Orcs are a ravenous horde of brutes who have nothing to contribute to a just world. Alignment and philosophy: The depredations of malice seem completely alien to the shi’ruul, as if the capacity for such things were ripped away in whatever calamity preceded their arrival on Temnia. This is not to say they are universally good, but rather that what evil does exists comes from an indifference to the suffering of “lesser” beings. Shi’ruul strongly tend towards good and do not trend towards or chaos or law. ## Adventures Shi’ruul often embark on adventure to explore and learn about the wider world. Knowledge is prized among the shi’ruul and even those disconnected from the Protectorate are drawn to learning new things. Many shi’ruul are guided by a desire to do good, and will take up crusades or other holy quests. ## Names Shi’ruul names are composed of a given name, a family name, a patroynmic (for females) or matronymic (for males) name, and a name based on the star sign under which they were born. This is all consolidated into a single name, which they use in everyday conversation. This habit also finds its way into conversations with outsider races. Shi’ruul will often refer to people by their full name even in the most informal context. Non-shi’ruul find shi’ruul names are too long and confusing to pronounce, and as a result those shi’ruul who deal with the outside races tend to refer to themselves by a shortened version of their true name. **Male Names:** Ke’pharul, Zor’aiemi, Xon’to’uulum, Polu’hom, Khen’nuudi **Female Names:** Zu’ul’aeron, Qu’ol’isharmaran, Vo’murquaran, Qe’det’onsae
# Racial Traits (RP 18) ### Standard Racial Traits - **Ability Score Modifier:** Shi’ruul are cunning and observant, but relatively fragile and delicate. This choice is made at character creation and cannot be changed. This ability cannot bring a shi’ruul’s caster level above their character level. #### Movement Racial Traits - **Glide:** Shi’ruul cannot fly, but they can use their wings to glide through the air. They do not take damage from falling (as if subject to feather fall), and can move 5 feet in any horizontal direction for every 1 foot they fall, falling at a speed of 60 feet per round. #### Offense Racial Traits - **Talons:** Shi’ruul talons are hard and sharp, granting them two claw attacks (1d4 points of damage each). #### Senses Racial Traits - **Darkvision:** Shi'ruul can see perfectly in the dark up to 60 feet. - **Low-Light Vision:** In addition to their ability to see perfectly in the dark up to 60 feet, shi'ruul have low-light vision, allowing them to see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light. #### Other Racial Traits - **Genealogical Divergence:** The Shi’ruul people are obsessed with rebirth and transformation. They have performed a number of arcane experiments on themselves, and as a result some shi’ruul are born with wildly different traits and abilities. Any small or medium sized avian humanoid, monstrous humanoid or native outsider who advances by class is considered a shi’ruul. This includes (but is not necessarily limited to) Aarakocra, Suqur, Kenku, Raptorans and Syrix. Such creatures retain all their normal traits and abilities, but their type is changed to outsider with the native and shi’ruul subtypes. They gain low light vision and darkvision 60 feet (if they did not already have these). They also acquire the Linguistic Difficulty trait.
# Shi'ruul Subraces ... ## An'gu Ten An'gu Ten are much smaller than their Shi'ruul cousins, appearing almost as children, despite their adult coloration and sober temperament. ### Alternate Racial Traits An'gu ten receive the following alternate racial traits by default: - **Ability Score Modifiers:** An'gu ten are quick and keen, but weaker than their kin. They gain +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, –2 Strength. These ability score modifiers replace the standard ability score modifiers. - **Small Size:** An'gu ten are small creatures, and gain a +1 size bonus to the AC, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a -1 penalty to their CMB and CMD, and +4 size bonus on stealth checks. - **Sneaky:** An'gu ten gain a +2 racial bonus to stealth and perception checks. This replaces the innately magical racial trait. - **Beak:** An'gu ten gain a bite attack. This ability replaces the talons racial trait. ## Aq'toran Aq'toran are easily distinguished from other shi'ruul, as they have stronger wings, affixed to the back, rather than to their arms. The Aq'toran revel in the joy of the open air, but do not have the same magical potential as their kin. Shi'ruul scholars theorize that the Aq'toran are further seperated from their outsider heritage ### Alternate Racial Traits Aq'toran receive the following alternate racial traits by default: - **Ability Score Modifiers:** Aq'toran are graceful and shrewd, but also frail. They gain +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, –2 Constitution. These ability score modifiers replace the standard ability score modifiers. - **Burst of Flight (3 RP):** Aq'toran can sustain flight in short bursts. They can sustain flight for one round per rank of acrobatics or fly they possess, after which time they are fatigued for one minute per round of flight. Their maneuverability is considered clumsy. Aq'toran cannot use this ability while exhausted, wearing medium or heavy armor, or carrying a medium or heavier load. This trait replaces the innately magical trait. - **Mortal Adjacency (-1 RP):** Spells that target humanoids have a 50% change of affecting an aq'toran. - **Soaring Soul (1 RP):** If an aq'toran is the target of a spell or spell-like ability that grants a fly speed, it affects the aq'toran as if the caster level were 1 higher, extending the duration and making it harder to dispel. ## Cuu'ra Larger and more imposing than their shi'ruul kin, cuu'ra... ### Alternate Racial Traits Cuu'ra receive the following alternate racial traits by default: - **Burly (3 RP):** - Cuu'ra gain a +1 size bonus to their CMD and CMB, and take a -2 to Stealth checks. They treat their natural attacks and unarmed strikes as if they were one size category larger than their actual size. These benefits stack with abilities that alter size (such as righteous might), but not those that alter effective size (such as improved natural weapon). This ability replaces innately magical. - **Winged Leaper (4 RP):** Cuu'ra wings do not let them glide effectively, but do help them move through the air. Cuu'ra take only half damage from falling (unless they are paralyzed or otherwise unable to move their arms), and are always considered to have a running start when jumping. This ability replaces the glide racial trait. **Perceptive:** Cuu'ra treat perception as a class skill. This trait replaces natural flyer.
# Racial Options ## Alternate Racial Traits - **Day sight:** Some shi'ruul are better acclimated to see during the day than at night. Shi'ruul with this trait gain a +2 racial bonus to Perception checks. This trait replaces low-light vision. - **Skilled survivor:** Some Shi’ruul are without wings. These are considered to be cursed or ill-born, and cast out from Shi'ruul. Such poor souls must rely on their wits and cunning to make their way in the world. Shi'ruul with this trait gain an additional skill rank at 1st level and one additional skill rank whenever they gain a level. This trait replaces the Shi'ruul's glide and wing-assisted movement traits. - **Weapon training:** Some shi'ruul disdain the use of their claws (or beaks) as weapons, or simply lack the strudy talons needed to make them effected weapons. Such shi'ruul tend to take up a weapon for personal defense. Shi'ruul are automatically proficient with a single weapon of their choice, and gain weapon focus as a bonus feat with that weapon. This trait replaces the talons or beak racial trait. *** #Aarakocra #Raptoran #Garuda
