# Neanderthal
##### (nee-an-dur-tal)
Neanderthals are a primitive folk who have found relative safety and good hunting in the frozen edges of Temnia. They have never seen the need to become more civilized, usually living in caves or abandoned underground ruins and hunting the surrounding regions with great skill.
## Physical Description
Neanderthals are hairy and thickly built, with long arms and barrel chests. Their heads are a bit larger than a human’s, with a sloping brow and a prodigious jaw filled with large strong teeth capable of cracking bones. They often adorn their pale skin with crude tattoos and war paint, either to afford themselves camouflage in natural environments or to strike fear into their enemies.
Scars are often held to be marks of honor and esteemed in neanderthal society, and are openly displayed both to honor the fallen enemy and to increase that person’s prestige in the eyes of his kin. Neanderthals are towering figures, often standing between 7 and 7-1/2 feet tall and weighing about 350 pounds.
## Society
Many of the Karrak accept that there are icemen who live beyond the northern reaches of their lands, naming them "furyag," but not all do. This is testament to how rarely the neanderthal people make their way into even the fringes of civilized lands.
The firspigin and huldra people live closer to the fringes of the Karrak kingdom, and occasionally encounter neanderthals. The clans of the furyag will occasionally trade furs and meats in times of need, but they tend to prefer self-reliance. Such trading is sporadic and grudging. Just as often they find themselves at odds with clans defending territory that was thought to be undiscovered or abandoned.
## Relations
Neanderthals prefer to rely on themselves or small communities of clans, rather than seeking interaction with the outside world. The most robust relationships are with the Karrak Kingdom, and much more the huldra and firspriggin that live in the outer reaches of the Kingdom's border.
## Alignment and Philsophy
Neanderthals lead simple lives and are at one with the natural world. Good and evil, law and chaos have little interest to neanderthals, and they prefer to react to new situations based on similar previous encounters. They have little interest in expanding their territories, but at the same time defend their homes with a ferocity equaled by few orc tribes. While they may be bound by longstanding ancestral traditions and religions that are viewed as laws of a sort, these traditions are highly mutable and prone to change when each generation comes into power.
## Adventures
The neanderthals value self-reliance and have little use for influence, power, treasure or luxury. But some neanderthals find themselves without clan or family due to violence, exile or tragedy. Some have need to find something that exists outside the frozen expanse of the northern wilds, either for themselves and their own piece of mind, or to bring back to the clan to aid them in their struggles. Neanderthals are very adaptable, and can quickly learn to fit into a more "civilized" society for as long as they need to, but most will do so only long enough to fulfil their quest and return to their home and kin.
## Naming Traditions
Neanderthals have simple names, yet they attribute great power to them. Names are typically guttural and short.
A neanderthal’s given name is a jealously guarded secret known only to his most trusted friends and the other members of his clan. To outsiders, a neanderthal typically refers to himself by his class or profession in the clan, along with his clan’s name. For example, a hunter might introduce himself as a hunter of the Elk Clan.
