# Maen
A primarily sea-faring race, Maen are a dichotomy. To outsiders, they appear to be extremely reserved, yet they are rumored to be exceptionally emotional. Both sides are actually true. As a race, Maen must maintain control over their internal emotional turmoil, except when they unleash these bottled-up emotions in powerful displays. Born with raging emotions that threaten to tear their psyche apart unless properly controlled, Maen do not know why they have these powerful emotions warring within them. Their legends speak of being wronged by an ancient deity that the Maen revolted against and overthrew, resulting in the emotional curse they maintain to date. Maen have a proclivity to martial studies, as it gives an outlet for their bottled emotions.
## Physical Description
Standing slightly taller than humans, roughly shoulder to shoulder with half-orcs, Maen are physically impressive. Male maen are usually equal in height, but slightly heavier than females. They have thick, dark hair on their heads, but lack any other hair on their body; instead their skin is covered in flecks of sparkling crystals, giving them a peculiar sparkle. The coloration of these crystals define the look for each individual Maen, ranging from pale white to jet black, and many believe that the coloration is determined by their most powerful emotion. Maen are naturally graceful and have fine features, possessing an elf-like beauty. They prefer heavier clothing, and wear armor if available, but tend to go barefoot, especially when aboard a ship.

# Racial Traits (16 RP)
### Standard Racial Traits
- **Ability Score Racial Traits:** Maen gain a +2 bonus to one ability score chosen at creation, to represent their varied nature.
- **Size:** Maen are Medium creatures and thus receive no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
- **Type:** Maen are humanoids with the ersoni subtype.
- **Base Speed:** Maen base land speed is 30 feet.
- **Languages:** Maen begin play speaking Common and ?. Maen with high Intelligence scores can learn any languages they want (except Druidic and other secret languages). See the [[Languages of Temnia]] page for more information about these languages.
#### Feat and Skill Racial Traits
- **Natural Sailors (3 RP):** Maen have a +2 bonus to Swim and Profession (sailor) checks. In addition, they gain a +2 bonus to Acrobatics and Climb checks made on sailing ships.
#### Offense Racial Traits
- **Turmoil (3 RP):** Maen constrain their raging emotions, but can store that emotional energy for later use. Each day, a Maen receives a number of turmoil points equal to one-half their character level (minimum 1). Spending a turmoil point is a swift action, and allows the Maen to do any of the following:
- Activate or maintain the Maen's Outburst ability.
- Extend the duration of any emotion-based effect currently affecting the Maen by one round.
- Gain a +1 bonus to the Maen's next Will Save against an ongoing enchantment (compulsion) effect.
- **Outburst (2 RP):** Maen can dampen their mental processes for an increase in raw power called an outburst. When they do so, they take a -2 penalty to Intelligence and Wisdom but gain a +2 bonus to Strength. The character must spend one power point at the beginning of each round during an outburst and may stop an outburst at any time as a free acrion.
- **Weapon Familiarity (1 RP):** Maen are proficient with flails. Maen treat any weapon with the word “Maen” in the name as a martial weapon rather than an exotic one.
#### Psionic Racial Traits
- **Naturally Psionic (2 RP):** Maen gain the Wild Talent feat as a bonus feat at 1st level. If a Maen takes levels in a psionic class, he instead gains the Psionic Talent feat.
- **Maen Psionics (2 RP):** Maen gain a +1 bonus to the saving throw DCs of spells or powers with the sonic descriptor that they cast or manifest. Maen also gain the following psi-like abilities (Manifester level is equal to 1/2 Hit Dice, minimum 1):
**1/day—**_energy ray_ (sonic only).
- **Psionic Aptitude (2 RP):** When a Maen takes a level in a favored class, he can choose to gain an additional power point instead of a hit point or skill point.
